A person bought a glass vase for $3.99 at a Goodwill in Richmond, Va., and then learned it was crafted by a famous Italian glass designer Carlo Scarpa. At auction, it went for more than $100,000.
On Wednesday, the vase was auctioned for $107,100 to an unidentified private art collector in Europe. About $83,500 went to Ms. Vincent and about $23,600 went to Wright Auction House.
Wright confirmed the vase’s authenticity after he sent two dedicated glass specialists from New York to Virginia to inspect it. Bidding for the vase opened at $24,000, the Times-Dispatch reported.
The vase was then listed as part of Wright's "Important Italian Glass" sale with a valuation of between $30,000 and $50,000. The final sale price more than doubled the top estimate.
