Paterson residents will celebrate the 96th birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Monday with a special ceremony at the city’s newly unveiled statue honoring the civil rights leader.

The statue will be built at the site of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial, which was originally dedicated in 1987 and relocated due to construction in 2017.

In 1983, about 20 years after King’s “I Have a Dream” speech, legislation for a Martin Luther King Jr. Day on the third Monday of January cleared Congress and President Ronald Reagan signed it.
