TAMPA (WFLA) – Simon Property Group, the largest owner of shopping malls in the nation, is closing all of its malls and retail properties because of the coronavirus outbreak.
Malls owned by Simon Property Group, which locally includes Tyrone Square and Tampa Premium Outlets, officially opened their doors Monday after more than six weeks of being closed.
By comparison, the United States has about 1,000 enclosed regional shopping malls. But, with a few notable exceptions, demand for new enclosed malls has been on the decline for years.
