"We started in 1992 with 15 swimmers, and we raised $15,000. Today, we have 615 swimmers and will probably break our $2 million goal," said event director Jean Fufidio.

The national Swim Across America organization generally awards more than 60 cancer research grants annually. Since its inception in 1987, the nonprofit has raised over $100 million.
