The University of Sunderland was established in 1992, having previously been Sunderland Polytechnic. The university has a city centre campus, a second in St Peter's and a third in London.
Following the opening, Ms Phillipson said: “The University of Sunderland has had a hugely positive impact on the region, creating opportunities for students and supporting local growth.
