SAN ANTONIO — As San Antonio prepares for yet another year of Fiesta, that fun also comes with some street closures. The Fiesta ordinance was approved at last Thursday's city council meeting.

The 100 block of Barrera Street, as well as other parcels of land in and around downtown San Antonio, were once owned by Barrera Street’s probable namesake, Agustin Barrera (1803-1883).

In the 1930s, San Antonio was home to the nation's largest pecan shelling industry, with nearly 400 factories. The wages and conditions did not reflect the robust operation, however.
