Catan, originally called Settlers of Catan, came out in 1995. In the multi-player game, competitors have to settle the island of Catan using resources like grain and lumber to build their societies.

Catan became more popular because it was already popular. You could find it in Target and Walmart. Eventually, you’d buy a set, or someone would buy one for you.

It is also fully compatible with Settlers of Catan. So if you already own that game, you can play it using this board if you wish (using the cards and pieces from the original).

The CATAN Masterpiece Series is on Kickstarter through March 21st, 2025. The accessories are currently slated for a Q4 backer delivery with a general release in 2026.

The board game, originally called the Settlers of Catan when introduced in 1995 and based on a set of hexagonal tiles, has sold tens of millions of copies and is available in more than 40 languages.

Catan is considered such an immense landmark of the hobby that, in certain circles, the years prior to and following its release are referred to as B.C. and A.C. (Before Catan and After Catan).
