I wouldn't recommend kids under 5 on the rugged parts of the Esperero Trail unless you have them in a pack. I was thinking of my son at that age and he would have either complained or made me nervous.

Try this experiment. Half an hour before sunset on a clear, cool November day, take a stroll on the short Nature Trail in Sabino Canyon. Choose a spot, any spot.

Later in the evening of June 30, 2025, another male hiker was rescued after becoming fatigued and unable to continue on a Sabino Canyon trail. The man was rescued and hoisted from the trail.
