Solid, liquid, gas, plasma — and a mysterious fifth thing? On Wednesday, scientists at Microsoft confirmed their creation of a quantum computer chip capable of upending technology as we know it.

This exotic state of matter combines features of solid, liquid and gaseous phases. Until now, simulating warm dense matter accurately has been considered a major challenge.

The second part of the experiment was making sure that they really did have a supersolid, considering no one had ever made this quantum state of matter using photons before.
