The end of the pier had already been closed off from the public as the city worked to renovate and repair weather over the last two years, said Santa Cruz Director of Parks and Recreation Tony Elliot.

Emily Ross was snorkeling in waist deep water near the pier at Lauderdale-by-the-Sea back on May 27 when she had the marine life encounter she never asked for.

Additionally, city staff will be presenting the pier design to various community groups, including the Ocean Beach Community Planning Group, the Historical Resources Board and the City Council.
