San Francisco’s famed Fisherman’s Wharf district is seeing a surge in sea lions. First appearing at Pier 39 after the 1989 earthquake, the sea lions have become a well-known tourist attraction.

More than a thousand sea lions are lounging at Pier 39 in San Francisco, Calif. That is double the number that usually shows up on the custom floating piers and a number that hasn't been seen ...

The city likes that the sea lions attract visitors to Pier 39. But with this year's record numbers, there simply is not enough space for the blubbery behemoths.

The repairs are done now, but Pier 39 harbormaster says some of the sea lions temporarily moved away during the work. Just look at the comparison to one week ago!

Some 1,100 to 1,200 sea lions have been counted flopping on and around the docks at San Francisco's Pier 39 in recent days — the highest number recorded in 15 years.

Sheila Chandor, Harbormaster for Pier 39 Marina says they've counted about 1,000 sea lions this week. "We haven't had these kind of numbers of sea lions for probably over 15 years," said Chandor.
