In the mid-1960s, the sandwich had really come into its own, with another restaurant, Geno’s, opening right across the street from Pat’s, and numerous other establishments launching.

A cheesesteak hoagie is a combination of a cold hoagie (as subs are called in the Philly area), and the traditional hot cheesesteak. These have lettuce, tomato and mayonnaise.

So, here’s what we did: we ordered 20 cheesesteak/Philly sandwiches from national chain sub shops with local locations. We ordered them as they came, without extras.

Back in 2009, I rated Tacoma’s DelBrocco’s and Philly Joe’s at the top of my Philly sandwich list. Both places were fast-casual sandwich shacks with great sandwiches.

But there’s one happy exception: the Philly cheesesteak. Said to have been created around 1916, this sandwich is an East Coast hit that has slowly spread from its urban Philadelphia origins.
