Owens-Illinois Glass Co. started in a small factory on Alton's Belle Street in 1873 as Illinois Glass Co. It later became the largest hollow glass manufacturing plant in the world.

The Kalama glass factory produces primarily wine bottles, but it also produces 22-ounce beer bottles. Owens-Illinois is interviewing employees and extending job offers this week, McCarthy said.

The Owens-Illinois plant made beer bottles, as well as glass packaging for spirits and mayonnaise. At peak production during the 1970s, more than 900 people worked there, most making union wages.
