KINGWOOD, Texas – At St. Martha Catholic Church in Kingwood, three sacred statues — including one of the Virgin Mary — once stood outside the sanctuary. Today, they’re gone.

A man who opened fire outside a Michigan church filled with worshippers on Sunday was struck by a vehicle and then fatally shot by security staff who averted a potential mass shooting, police said.

Authorities responded to a gunman at CrossPointe Community Church in Wayne. Two church employees returned fire and killed the shooter, officials said.
