ULAN BATOR, Mongolia, July 11 (UPI) -- A statue of Mongolian leader Genghis Khan has been erected in Ulan Bator as part of festivities celebrating the anniversary of the nation's unification.
(Photo: AP) Genghis Khan, the legendary Mongolian ruler and horseman who invaded half the world in the 13th century, now keeps a watch over the land- locked and scenic country from the steppes.
After Outer Mongolia secured de facto independence from the Soviet Union in 1990, Japanese and U.S. expeditions have spent millions of dollars in vain attempts to locate the tomb.
“If Mongolians again perform these rites, Mongolia will be blessed and will prosper,” said P. Davaanyam, the academy’s president, who claims to be a 30th-generation descendant of Genghis Khan.
