He named his ship's flag "Old Glory." At the time, the American flag boasted 24 stars, and Driver flew it proudly as he sailed to China, India, Gibraltar and throughout the South Pacific.

The first, local Flag Day observances came after the Civil War and eventually a federal law designated June 14 as Flag Day in 1949, under World War I combat veteran Harry Truman.
