Oak Island now bans deep holes and large shovels on its beaches after first responders raised safety concerns. The updated ordinance limits holes to 12 inches and requires them to be filled by 6 p.m.
The young woman was evaluated on scene and later transported to Novant Health Brunswick Medical Center in Bolivia.
Holes dug on the beach strand cannot be deeper than 12”; can only be dug using toy shovels intended for use by children; must be attended at all times; and must be completely filled in by 6:00 p.m.
