Tourism earns the Dutch economy €82bn (£70bn) and in 2018 accounted for about 761,000 jobs – one in 13 jobs in the Netherlands – but there is also concern over the environmental cost.

The Netherlands, in fact, released a nuanced 10-year-plan dubbed Perspective 2030 last October to explore the various issues arising from increased tourism over the next decade.

Both Holland and the Netherlands can be used interchangeably to describe the European country. However, this is set to change in 2020 as the region pushes forward with plans for an official rebrand.
