Thursday’s horrifying tourist helicopter crash into the Hudson River that killed six people was one of several deadly tragedies involving the aircraft in recent years. At least 32 people have died in helicopter accidents in NYC since 1977, according to The Associated Press.

A New York City sightseeing helicopter has broken apart in midair and crashed into the Hudson River, killing six people.

Officials with the New York City Police Department (NYPD) confirmed a helicopter was in the water, as of 3:40 p.m. "Due to a helicopter crash in the Hudson River, in the vicinity of the West Side Highway and Spring Street, expect emergency vehicles and traffic delays in the surrounding areas," according to a statement from the NYPD.
