Authorities in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina said one person is dead and at least 11 others were wounded after a gunman opened fire in the middle of the city's famed entertainment district.

Myrtle Beach Mayor Brenda Bethune told WBTW-TV the officer responded appropriately. The Horry County deputy coroner identified the person shot as 18-year-old Jerrius Davis, according to WBTW.

“This is not just a Myrtle Beach issue; this is a societal issue, and we have young people getting guns that they should not be allowed to have,” said Bethune.

One person died and 11 others were hurt during a disturbance and officer-involved shooting Saturday night on North Ocean Boulevard, Myrtle Beach police say.
