I was around 6 years old when I first watched Disney's original animated “Mulan.” I was too young to realize how rare it would be to see part of my culture reflected in a mainstream movie.

When Disney’s “Mulan” hit theaters in the summer of 1998, I skipped it. Looking back now, I can see that avoiding the film had a lot to do with how I was navigating my own identity at the time.
