MILWAUKEE — The Milwaukee County Zoo is getting rid of its steam locomotives for environmental reasons. The zoo sold the engines to a museum in Wisconsin Dells.
Both of the steam locomotives came from Wisconsin Dells – and that is where both will be heading this year. The No. 1916 engine will roll out on April 1, followed by the No. 1924 engine on Oct. 31.
The train has been at the Milwaukee County Zoo since 1958, and the steam engines were gifts from The Milwaukee Journal; they're named after then-Journal executives Harry Grant and Irwin Maier.
