If you're driving along Route 66 in Luther, you'll see a new flashy sign. It was paid for with dollars from the Oklahoma Rt. 66 Project Grant, ahead of the "Mother Road's" centennial next year.

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — Mel-O-Cream donuts was recently awarded a Preserve Route 66 Legacy Business Grant to create a unique sign along the historic route.

Back at the Route 66 sign, a line of maybe two dozen people stood waiting for their turn to pose for a picture. Few had the road-weary look of people who had just completed a 2,400-plus-mile odyssey.

The law creates the Route 66 Supplemental Signage Fund to provide the funds. Guidelines for supplemental signage, installation and maintenance will be established by Jan. 31, 2026.
