The study included 1,543 maternal fatalities from 1999 to 2002 and 3,478 maternal deaths from 2018 to 2021. Between 1999-2002 and 2018-2021, MMRs increased by 144%.

Overall Increase: Maternal mortality in the U.S. has doubled since 2014, with rates surpassing 32 deaths per 100,000 live births in 2025.
