Martin Luther King III and Bernice King opposed the Trump administration's decision to release more than 240,000 pages of records concerning the slain civil rights leader.

Mr Trump promised as a candidate to release government files related to President John F Kennedy’s 1963 assassination. When he took office in January 2025, the US president signed an executive order to declassify the JFK records, along with those associated with the assassinations of Robert F Kennedy (RFK) and King.

US President Donald Trump's administration has released a trove of records on the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr, including FBI surveillance files on the civil rights leader. A court-imposed order had kept the documents, totalling 230,000 pages, blocked from public view since 1977.
