Google is among the first companies to rename maps from Gulf of Mexico to Gulf of America. Other software leaders, like Apple Maps, are starting to follow suit.

Mexico will take Google to court if maps shown to US-based users continue to label the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America across the entire body of water, President Claudia Sheinbaum said Monday, arguing that US President Donald Trump’s order to rename it only applies to the part of the continental shelf under US control.

The search giant says it is simply following a longstanding policy about geographical names. Its competitor Apple has yet to make the switch. The majority of Google Maps users across the globe today will notice a significant change on the platform if they zoom into the body of water south of the United States and east of Mexico.
