Atmospheric rivers brought record-breaking snowfall to the mountain over the winter, allowing the resort to stay open into August. It will close just shy of 100 days before the new season starts.

Mammoth Mountain officials said the slide occurred during avalanche mitigation work following a significant Sierra Nevada snowstorm, during which about six feet of snow fell in 36 hours.
