The federal government’s ban on incandescent light bulbs took effect on Tuesday, more than a decade and a half after such a rule was first proposed intending to promote energy efficiency.
The rule went fully into effect Tuesday, August 1. The rule passed by President Joe Biden’s Department of Energy in April 2022 states that light bulbs must emit a minimum of 45 lumens per watt.
This would take effect by the end of 2024 and effectively phase out compact fluorescent light bulbs. The Energy Department says the move would save the average family at least $100 a year.
