COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. — Jim Leyland ’s family and friends, well-aware of how emotional he is, aren’t quite sure how Leyland will get through his Baseball Hall of Fame speech Sunday.
Jim Leyland, who led the Marlins to their first World Series title and later won two American League pennants, was elected to baseball's Hall of Fame.
Leyland was a manager in the majors from 1986 to 2013. He guided the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1986 to 1996, leading the team to the National League Championship Series from 1990 to 1992.
The Detroit Tigers retired Leyland’s No. 10 on Saturday, putting him next to Sparky Anderson -- both literally and figuratively -- as one of two of the franchise’s managerial legends.
Managing 22 seasons in MLB, Leyland won 1,769 games over stops with the Pittsburgh Pirates (1986-1996), Florida Marlins (1997-1998), Colorado Rockies (1999) and Detroit Tigers (2006-2013).
Leyland, who currently works as a special assistant in the Tigers' front office, managed 3,499 games across 22 seasons. He picked up 1,769 wins along the way, good for 18th on MLB's all-time list.
Joe Torre was on this committee. Leyland’s Tigers bounced Torre’s Yankees from the Octoberfest in the 2006 ALDS. But also … Chipper Jones and Tom Glavine were on this committee.

Blasting Bonds Leyland went viral when going viral wasn't even a thing, back in spring training 1991, when as manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates, he went scorched-earth on the team's biggest star ...
