A new study published Monday in JAMA Pediatrics found that over 7,000 more children died from firearm-related injuries in the years following a 2010 Supreme Court decision that gave states greater power to set their own gun laws. Most of those deaths occurred in states that opted to make it easier to purchase and carry firearms.

Firearms have risen to become the leading cause of death among children and teens in the United States in recent years, but a new study joins a growing set of evidence that gun laws can make a difference.

Guns are now the leading cause of death for youth in the United States. Researchers from Mass General Brigham investigated whether firearm mortality rates among U.S. children ages 0–17 changed in the 13 years following a 2010 Supreme Court ruling that applied the Second Amendment to state and local governments.
