An 8.8-magnitude earthquake, one of the largest in the past century, struck off the coast of Russia this week, prompting tsunami warnings worldwide.

A powerful earthquake struck Wednesday off Russia’s Far East coast, flooding a fishing port with waves from a tsunami, cutting power to a few areas and sending some panicked residents fleeing buildings but causing only a few injuries.

A 2014 city of Seattle report examining Seattle's "inherent vulnerability" to a tsunami noted that a tsunami will "almost certainly" happen again here.
