Three Kmart stores will be open after the Kmart in Avenel, New Jersey, 15 miles south of New York City, is scheduled to permanently close on April 16.

The last full-size Kmart in the contiguous United States had been able to survive longer than other stores based on that limited competition. “We need a store like this,” said Arnone.

Kmart once boasted more than 2,000 stores in the U.S. before merging with Sears in 2005 in a deal engineered by hedge fund manager and CEO Eddie Lampert, according to USA Today.
