This chart shows the historical relationship between unemployment and job openings, going back to December 2000, the first month the Bureau of Labor Statistics started tracking openings.

The number of job seekers per opening was 3.52 in August, down from 3.56 in July and 4.42 in August of 2011.

There were just 3.05 job seekers per opening in March, compared with 3.29 a year earlier and 5.67 in March 2010.
