Jefferson Airplane guitarist Jorma Kaukonen and bassist Jack Casady ultimately decided to focus on Hot Tuna, an offshoot band they formed in 1970. Singer Marty Balin eventually went solo.
Jefferson Airplane’s debut show was on Aug. 13, 1965, at San Francisco’s The Matrix nightclub, which Balin had converted into a music outlet from a pizza parlor.
Using a group of ad hoc musicians with Airplane members in the mix, the album was credited to Paul Kantner and Jefferson Starship. The name was recycled when the new band was formed in 1974.
