Needing a way to get their grain to Cedar Rapids, shippers along the line bought the railroad from the trustee of the Rock Island bankruptcy. Iowa Northern Railway Co. was formed in 1982.

With the Waterloo bridge out of use, Iowa Northern has had to reroute traffic on a 300-mile detour through Manly and Nevada, and send shipments over UP and Canadian National lines to Cedar Rapids.
