An Osteen woman is facing animal cruelty charges for leaving behind several dogs, a cat, and a turtle when she fled Hurricane Milton for Indiana in October, according to animal control officers.

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Nearly six months after Hurricane Milton devastated the Tampa Bay area, the storm is now officially considered one of the most powerful Atlantic hurricanes on record.

FEMA said Milton had led to more than 21,100 claims, totaling about $740 million, as of last week. It said estimated losses range from $1.2 billion to $2.9 billion.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis held a news conference Wednesday at a South Florida dog rescue, where he signed into law two pieces of legislation enacting tougher penalties in certain animal cruelty cases.
