FIRST LANDFALL. Ian became a hurricane over the northwestern Caribbean Sea at 5:00 a.m. EDT on September 26 while passing southwest of the Cayman Islands.

It was located about 150 miles (240 kilometers) west of Grand Cayman. It had maximum sustained winds of 35 mph (55 kph) and was moving northwest at 9 mph (15 kph).

A broad area of low pressure in the western Caribbean Sea is becoming better organized and the National Hurricane Center is initiating advisories on the system as of 4 p.m. Sunday.
