Officials excavating North Carolina's Lake Lure Reservoir following Hurricane Helene have unearthed two "remarkable" and rare artifacts from the dried lakebed.

On July 16, 2005, 20 years ago this evening, Hurricane Emily strengthened to Cat 5 intensity with peak winds of 160 mph as it was southwest of Jamaica in the western Caribbean Sea.

Before Beryl leapfrogged it in 2024, Hurricane Emily set the bar for record early Cat 5 hurricanes in the Atlantic Basin during what would become a historic 2005 hurricane season.
