Hurricane Milton became a Category 5 hurricane around noon EDT Monday before reaching its top speed of 180 mph at 5 p.m. Monday near the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico.

Severe storms were expected to rip across parts of the northern U.S. on Monday, bringing numerous hazards to multiple states.
