Turns out, southwest Virginia has more than 600 miles of trails in the Roanoke Valley alone. Virginia is one of the 14 states the Appalachian Trail runs through and can claim one-fourth of the trail.

The agency says the park has 37 miles of hiking trails that meander through some 15,000 acres. It is the largest protected natural area in the Washington region.
