Such scenes unfold daily at one of Cuba’s most popular tourist destinations — Finca Vigia (Lookout Estate), the 12-acre villa that was the longtime residence of Ernest Hemingway.

And after Hemingway’s suicide in July of 1961, the president gave Mary Hemingway special permission to retrieve personal items from their home in Havana, which was otherwise off-limits to Americans.

Hemingway spent more than 20 years at the home near Havana, where he wrote “The Old Man and the Sea.” Time and the elements have severely damaged the hacienda, called Finca Vigia, or Lookout Farm.
