The harvest moon is the full moon that occurs closest to the autumnal equinox, which this year is Sept. 22. The harvest moon's name has long been tied to when crops need to be picked from the fields.

This year, people in the eastern time zone can look for September’s full Harvest Moon to appear just after sunset on Thursday, Sept. 28, according to the Old Farmer's Almanac.

How to see the harvest full supermoon and lunar eclipse The best times to view the event will depend on your location, but the lunar eclipse will peak at 10:44 p.m. ET, according to NASA.
