Happisburgh lighthouse, saved from the brink of rack and ruin in 1990 with help from her late Majesty, Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother, has been given a new lease of life with a new royal patron.

Preparation work to give the only independent lighthouse in the UK a new lick of paint has begun. Happisburgh Lighthouse in Norfolk was last repainted in 1998, but the sea winds have taken their toll.

The lighthouse was saved from closure in 1988 by being taken over by an independent charitable trust which continues to run the light. It will take 300 litres of paint to complete the job.
