The Gold Star recognition first appeared in 1918, when families would cover a gold star over the blue star to indicate that their loved one had been killed overseas while serving in the U.S. military.

The gold star near the top right means you're already good to go. If you haven't renewed your license since 2016, you can still use it until it expires or until Oct. 1, 2020, whichever comes first.
