It began in the 1940s when Jordan built a getaway home by hand on top of Deer Shelter Rock, a chunk of stone rising 60 feet above the surrounding landscape, according to the House on the Rock website.

The Rock House is built into "a 45 foot high section of one of Colorado's beloved 200 million year old red rocks and surrounded on 3 sides by community open space," according to the house's listing.
