A Georgia Department of Natural Resources game warden fatally shot a man who ran at them with a knife at an intersection in Middle Georgia on Tuesday afternoon, officials said.

The incident occurred near Highway 341 and Brent Road in Barnesville, following a homeowner's report of a trespasser.

The game warden shot Smith. Smith died at the scene. Smith’s body will be taken to the GBI Crime Lab where an autopsy will be completed. The GBI will conduct an independent investigation.
