After a weekend of severe flash flooding across the DMV, including Montgomery County and Silver Spring, the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (COG) says some of the hardest-hit areas weren’t flagged on FEMA’s flood maps.

Timothy Gloria, a Kerrville resident, applied for aid from the Federal Emergency Management Agency after his car was flooded. Days later, he received a notice offering just $50 to replace the vehicle. “It’s an old vehicle, but I need it,” Timothy Gloria said.

Camp Mystic successfully appealed to remove several structures from a FEMA flood zone, despite being located in a high-risk flood area in Texas Hill Country.

There are questions over why oversight was eased at Mystic Camp as it expanded in a hazardous floodplain, the AP reported.

Montgomery County officials are expected to explore participating in the National Flood Insurance Program. Preliminary discussion took place at Tuesday morning's county board of supervisors meeting. County Auditor Jill Ozuna recently received information from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources regarding floodplain management regulations necessary to join the NFIP.

The City of New Braunfels is considering a remapping project of the Dry Comal Creek floodplain within the city, which was last remapped in a 2003-2005 project.

The groups also want lawmakers to examine land-use practices and consider ways to protect natural resources, which they say will in turn help protect lives.
