During the 1800s, when Eastern State Penitentiary first opened in Philadelphia, much controversy surrounded its practice of changing the behavior of inmates through confinement in solitude with labor.

According to Eastern State, the penitentiary welcomed 17,000 visitors during Bastille Day’s inaugural year of 1995 — in 2017, it saw more than 250,000 visitors.
