Preventing DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis) When Traveling - MSN
Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a major health threat that occurs when a blood clot forms in a large vein.
DVT occurs when a "blood clot develops in a deep vein," most commonly in the lower leg, thigh or pelvis, though it can also occur in the arm, said the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
According to the Mayo Clinic, deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is defined as a blood clot that forms the 'deep veins', usually in the legs. In Wembanyama's case, the clot is located in his shoulder.
A person with DVT and people taking blood-thinning medications may need to avoid certain medications, foods, and activities. Learn more here.
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, up to 100,000 Americans die annually from pulmonary embolisms caused by DVT — and around 25% never have a symptom before dying suddenly.
