The Colonel died in hospital. He is survived by his wife and three children. Col MN Rai was a brave officer and had been involved in intense operations in South Kashmir for last two years.

Col Rai was awarded Yudh Seva medal on Republic Day for for outstanding contribution in planning and conduct of operations including a gun battle with militants in south Kashmir last year.
